Writing

Writing at Woodmansterne Primary School incorporate the following four phases:-
1) Speaking and Listening
2) Reading
3) Talk for Writing
4) Shared Writing and Independent Writing

These four phases are incorporated into each Literacy unit, to ensure that the children at Woodmansterne can independently write across a range of genres. Writing is a culmination of all the skills that the children have developed when exploring the text through speaking, listening and reading in the first 3 phases.

At the beginning of each Literacy lesson, class teachers set a Literacy starter for the children to complete. Class teachers plan these short acitivities using Grammar and Punctuation objectives with the aim to plug gaps and improve the children's writing. Have a go at some of the Grammar and Punctuation activities on the blog with your child and test their understanding using the flashcards?

This year we have introduced KUNG FU PUNCTUATION, to highlight the purpose of each type of punctuation from Level 1-Level 5, with the aim to ensure that every child uses a variety of punctuation types in all writing.

The pyramid below highlights the progression in punctuation from Levels 1-5. Have a look at your child's writing. What punctuation types are they consistently using in their writing?
