Speaking and Listening

Speaking and Listening is the first of 4 phases in the Literacy curriculum. At Woodmansterne Primary School, we believe that first hand experiences which include visual, auditory and kinaesthic skills, produce super writing. Therefore we ensure that at the beginning of each unit, we provide children with the opportunity to use their speaking and listening skills in order to articulate their ideas to support them in the writing process.

Each week; outside of the Literacy lesson, children also participate in Speaking and Listening games in a group to further develop their skills independently. Board games such as 'Articulate', 'Who, What, Where', 'Charades', 'Pictionary' and many more are played in class with the children. At Woodmansterne we believe that such games encourage the children to use their speaking and listening skills in a variety of contexts, as well as developing their co-operation skills when working in a group.
